Behind the Scenes at Buzztime with Jenna Zdanowski
At Buzztime, we have a wide array of interesting, fun and passionate employees that all play a significant role in perfecting our product and keeping our customers happy! We’d love to give you the chance to take a peek behind the scenes at who exactly these amazing people are.
Jenna Zdanowski is the Vice President of Human Resources here at Buzztime. Not only does Jenna oversee the HR team, Facilities and handle employee relations, she’s also the leader of our internal “culture committee” team, The Buzz Team! Jenna joined Buzztime in 2011 and has been a strong catalyst in making Buzztime a fun, productive and positive place for its employees. She loves cooking, dancing, has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and another in Marketing, and her dream as a child was to become a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. With her positive spirit, we can see why she would have made a great one!
What is your favorite Buzztime game to play?
Hands down, I love Questionnairey! It’s a live trivia game that is extremely social and fun; players try to guess the “most popular answer” coming back from surveys versus the “correct answer”. I feel this game opens up social fun to a bigger audience because you don’t have to be book smart to win; however, you do have to have enough emotional intelligence to predict what a surveyed crowd would say. As far as our Network games go, I love Trendalicious Trivia! I like to keep up with what is trending and that game keeps me in the loop and on my toes.
What do you think makes for a great atmosphere at a bar & restaurant?
I think there are two separate answers for that question honestly. In my opinion, what makes a great bar, doesn’t necessarily make a great restaurant.
Not to be Buzztime cliché, but a great bar has a “buzz” about it. The atmosphere and flow usually promotes social interaction, the people are energetic and ready to unwind and let loose, the music is pumping and let’s face it, if there are beautiful girls in the bar then that is where the guys want to be. A smart, successful bar should try to attract girls which would ultimately attract guys. I’m sure Women’s Rights Activists would kill me for saying that – and I don’t intend for my answer to be discriminatory (HR disclaimer) but I am simply speaking the truth about human nature and what I see working!
A successful restaurant has great ambiance, great food, impeccable service, something unique about it that distinguishes it from the millions of other restaurants and last but not least, perfect candle-lit lighting (the kind that makes everyone look good! J) Wow, my answers are starting to sound superficial aren’t they!
What attracted you to the hospitality industry?
In Human Resources, my team and my role in any company I am with is all about “service” to both internal employees and outside customers. I strongly believe in putting others first and being a Servant Leader. Throughout college I was a waitress and absolutely loved it! I went on to work for service oriented companies and non-profits, which ultimately have the same goal in mind as the hospitality industry – taking care of people. Buzztime does that two-fold; it services both the client (bars & restaurants) and the consumer.
What is your favorite go-to drink?
I used to be a Diet Pepsi addict, but the artificial sweeteners are terrible for you so I made a deal with my Dad that if he quit smoking, I would give up Diet Pepsi on January 1, 2013. I feel like a crack addict without it; I think about it every day and crave it from sun up to sun down! But it’s been 6 months and 9 days since I’ve had a “drink” and I’m going strong! It’s worth it for both my Dad’s and my health. Otherwise, a nice class of red wine is typically what I order during a nice dinner out.
What celebrity, living or dead, would you most like to have a drink with?
I would have a drink with Prince – or the Artist formerly known as Prince (not sure what he is calling himself these days… maybe that should be a Trendalicious Trivia question!) Prince is a musical genius and plays over 27 instruments. He is known to be extremely shy and doesn’t talk much so I’d ask him to perform a personal concert. He would probably be fine with that considering he doesn’t drink anyway (he had a religious awakening some years back and swore off alcohol and wild living).
If you had a bar, what would you name it?
1.) Scratching your head? See response above – That is Prince’s best album
2.) Purple is my favorite color
3.) I love the rain and I’d make the restaurant a cave-like atmosphere with purple rain in the different caverns (kind of like Rainforest Café)
4.) Prince music would be playing (I know, I’m kind of going overboard with the whole Prince thing huh)
5.) There would be amazing candle-lit lighting (per question #2 above)
If you had a super power, what would it be?
I would protect all children from child abuse. Any time a child would be in harm’s way, I would get a signal and the child would be instantly put in to a loving environment with a loving family and have no memory of any trauma. People that abuse children don’t deserve to have them, period. I have volunteered with abused children for years.
What’s one cool thing about Buzztime you wish people knew?
Buzztime has a really cool and dedicated, volunteer group of people called the Buzz Team. It is our Culture Committee and the members work very hard to develop both strategic and fun initiatives to promote a great work environment. These people really care and go above and beyond their own role to make a difference to the bigger picture!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you want with you?
I would have my two kids Dusty (age 15 ½) and Avery (age 8), unlimited music and sound system, and a restaurant with a diverse menu and eternal food supply. Of course if I am thinking practically, I would only need one thing, a boat, and it would be to get off the island!
Tune in each week to catch the next behind the scenes segment of our Buzztime team.
