What is your favorite Buzztime game to play?
The ones you haven’t had a chance to play yet….the ones I am working on. I love Friday afternoons here at HQ, where we test new concepts for trivia games and other formats that engage people in the bars.
What do you think makes for a great atmosphere at a bar & restaurant?
Life. Energy. Seems like a throw away statement, but frankly, I love bars and the more life and energy it has, the more I am into. I love a good dive bar but as long as it has that energy and buzz that is familiar yet new and exciting, I am there.
What attracted you to the industry?
I love bars. Honestly I am not a drunk. I love what bars represent, the same way I love coffee shops. Bars and restaurants are the social meeting spots of the modern world. I love when a bar is so familiar and has such a following that the staff and regulars are friends and family. Cheers is real. It’s not an imagined place, every town has a bar like that. Many towns have multiple bars like that. It’s amazing. We make a choice to drink there. We could drink at home for less but we crave that 3rd place, away from home and away from work, where we can just be.
What is your favorite go-to drink?
Smithwicks. I work at an Irish bar on the side and after 5 years, I still go back to Smithwicks. It’s a well-balanced, simple red ale. Doesn’t get better than that. Lighter than a Guiness and heavier than a Harp, it’s my go-to beer. If I am dipping into the booze, I am a sucker for a great rum drink. I am obsessed, yes very obsessed with tiki bars, so slide me a Mai Tai (not the weak kind you get on vacation) or a Zombie and I one happy laid back guy.
What celebrity, living or dead, would you most like to have a drink with?
Do I have to choose just one? The go to would be George Carlin but in my dreams I would share drinks with our forefathers. Half of them loved whiskey and bourbon and the other half loved beer. Hell, Thomas Jefferson created his own brewery at his home in Monticello and George Washington had his own recipe.
If you had a super power, what would it be?
Flight. Can you get a DUI or rather an FUI if you fly home after a few drinks?
What’s one cool thing about Buzztime you wish people knew?
Oh geez, I cannot express to people how freaking cool we are, we were and how cool we will be. I know that doesn’t sound terribly articulate but the truth is we were created on a complex idea, well before the era of smartphones, tablets, social media and the cloud. We have layered these concepts into this experience and if you cannot see how cool that is, I am bummed because I am blown away by the complexity of this beast.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you want with you?
A still (would need to figure out how to make it), a guitar (would need to teach myself to play) and my wife.
Tune in each week to catch the next behind the scenes segment of our Buzztime team.
