In order to predict the play during a live QB1 game, the player must record a Play-Call selection beginning with one of two basic Play-Calls, RUN or PASS. Players can earn additional points, on a higher risk equals higher reward premise, by adding the direction of the intended play (LEFT, MIDDLE or RIGHT) to the Play-Calls basic call, as well as including the distance of the PASS plays (BACK, SHORT or DEEP). All Play-Calls must be registered before the snap of the ball to be eligible to be scored for that play. However, players may change their call at anytime, and as many times as they choose, up until the snap of the ball. At that point all Play-Calls are locked in.
The Official Play-Call, which is determined by the QB1 game officials, will provide the player with points based on the prediction. Points can be earned for the correct Play-Call or a partially correct Play-Call. In turn, points are lost on an incorrect Play-Call.
In addition, players can earn bonus points for having the correct Basic Play-Call (RUN or PASS) on plays during which first downs and touchdowns occur. Furthermore, bonuses may be earned for Consecutive Calls (CC's) in which players are rewarded for correctly predicting a string of basic Play-Calls, with extra bonus for more specific predictions. Please see the Scoring Matrix for point scoring scenarios.
QB1 OFFICIAL PLAY-CALLS
QB1 officials use the following criteria when making play-calls :
RUN PLAYS
Run Plays are defined as:
- The Quarterback hands off the football, or attempts to do so.
- The Quarterback pitches the ball laterally and underhand to a runner.
- The Quarterback keeps the ball on a designed run play.
- The Quarterback takes a knee for the purpose of running out the clock or for a safety.
The direction of a RUN Play-Call is based on the direction in which the ball carrier runs toward the line of scrimmage. The direction is based on where the tackles were lined up at the snap of the ball
(See Run Diagram).
RUN MIDDLE will be called when the ball carrier takes the ball along or between where the tackles are lined up at the snap of the ball.
RUN RIGHT will be called when the ball carrier takes the ball to the right of where the tackles are lined up at the snap of the ball.
RUN LEFT will be called when the ball carrier takes the ball to the left of where the tackles are lined up at the snap of the ball.
RUN SCRAMBLE will be called when the direction of the ball carrier cannot be definitively determined (i.e. when the ball carrier does not take a definite direction, or multiple directions, toward the line of scrimmage).
RUN SCRAMBLE will also be called when the Quarterback takes a knee.
PASS PLAYS
Pass plays are defined as:
- The ball being thrown overhand, regardless of direction.
- The ball being thrown forward, either overhand or underhand.
- A designed pass play, but no pass is attempted (i.e. QB SACK, PASS SCRAMBLE).
Direction and Distance on PASS plays will be determined by where the receiver first makes contact with the field after touching the ball (usually, but not always, his first foot). In the event of an incomplete pass or an interception, the intended receiver will be determined.
PASS LEFT will be called when the receiver lands outside the left hash mark.
PASS MIDDLE will be called when the receiver lands on or between the hash marks.
PASS RIGHT will be called when the receiver lands outside the right hash mark.
PASS BACK will be called when the receiver lands behind the line of scrimmage.
PASS SHORT will be called when the receiver lands on, or up to, 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.
PASS DEEP will be called when the receiver lands more than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.
PASS SCRAMBLE will be called in the following situations:
- When the Quarterback runs the ball after not finding a receiver on a designed pass play, and gains yards.
- When the ball is intentionally thrown at the ground in order to stop the clock.
- When the ball is intentionally thrown away in order to avoid a loss of yards.
- When the intended receiver on the play cannot be definitively determined.
QB SACK will be called when the Quarterback is tackled for a loss on a designed pass play.
TIPPED PASS will be called when the ball is tipped and drops incomplete, and the intended receiver cannot be definitively determined.
OPTION (LEFT, RIGHT, or MIDDLE) will be called on a play designed for the Quarterback (or RB after a pitch or hand-off) to roll out left or right, and he has apparent receiver(s) downfield, but opts to run the ball.
NOTE: this is NOT the traditional option play seen in many college football offensive alignments, in which the QB rolls out and has the option to pitch it to a RB, or keep it and run it himself.
NO PLAY
No Play will be called in the following situations:
- When the QB1 Referee cannot see the snap of the ball. This is generally called when the television coverage comes back from showing a replay, graphic, or advertisement, etc., and does not show the snap of the play.
- When the play is affected to the extent that Run or Pass cannot be determined (i.e. Center snaps the ball early and fumbles, QB trips at the snap, QB collides with RB, etc.).
PENALTIES
Penalties will be called based on their outcome on the field. The following is a list of Penalties and their corresponding QB1 Official Play-Call.
- Pass Interference:
- Defensive Pass Interference:
- In the NFL, the Play-Call stands and yardage is awarded to the spot of the foul. 100 Bonus Points are also earned.

- Illegal Forward Pass: (QB throws the ball after he has run past the line of scrimmage).
- The Play-Call is PASS SCRAMBLE. It's a loss of down penalty and 5 yards lost on the play.
- Personal Foul: (Roughing, clipping, etc., during the play).
- If yardage was gained on the play, the original Play-Call stands with the appropriate yardage AND 15 yards are awarded from end of the play.

- Illegal Block in the Back on the offense:
- The Play-Call is changed to PENALTY and 10 yards are subtracted from the spot of the foul.
Scoring Notes
- Direction will not be scored when the Play-Call is RUN SCRAMBLE. All RUN calls will score 120 points.

- Neither direction nor distance will be scored when the Play-Call is PASS SCRAMBLE, QB SACK, or TIPPED PASS. All PASS calls will score 100 points.
- When the Play-Call is NO PLAY or PENALTY, Playcalls will not be scored and GAMEBREAKERS will be reset to the prior status.
Gadget Plays
- When the Quarterback throws, pitches, or hands the ball to another player, who then throws the ball downfield, the official Play-Call is: PASS (plus appropriate direction and distance)
- When the Quarterback throws, pitches, or hands the ball to another player, who pitches the ball back to QB, who then throws the ball downfield, the official Play-Call is: PASS (plus appropriate direction and distance)
- When the Quarterback pitches the ball to Running Back, who then tries to throw the ball, but does not find a receiver and runs with the ball instead, the official Play-Call is: OPTION (Right or Left)
Kicking Plays
- Punts, kickoffs and field goals are not called in QB1.
- Fake kick plays will only be called when the snap is taken from under center (i.e. a player runs up to the line and takes the snap from the center, becoming the quarterback for the play).
